How does the director of se7en establish character by the use of propsand enigmas?

In the opening of se7en, they create character by show Detective Summerset by showing his flat being very bland with colour to show that he live a boring home life and isolation. Also having the chest bored on the table show intelligent and loneliness because it is in the middle of a game which could show that he plays on his own. Also the props on the table in figure 1 are use to show who he is be being thing he uses and needs in his everyday life, this help us build his character by not hearing about what he does or hearing speak at all in the opening scene.

But in figure one they create an enigma by the having the paper rose which he does not pick up and just leaves it which create confusion by the audience wondering why it is there and lead use to think about how it is important to him and his life. Also in this scene we see Detective Summerset putting his tie and jacket on, ready of work and in this scene we learn that he is a tidy and smart character from the way he dresses and that he pick off dirt on his jacket before putting it on. through the whole of the opening there is sirens to show that Summerset live in a dangerous place.

In the next scene we are in a homicide crime scene where Summerset ask a question about the kid and if he saw it happen and an other detective replied ' who cares about the kid. Eeveryone cant wait until you leave Summers.' This show that Summerset has not got many friends and is a lonely person. After that a new Detective comes and ask Summerset some question and Summerset has own questions like why does he come and work homicide here and during this time it is pouring with rain to show that the place they are in not a nice place to be and also in figure 2 the bars on the window and the canopies above that show entrapment due to the place they are living in is not an easy place to get away with everything.

Later in the day we see Summerset going to bed and he uses a metronome to help him go to sleep but the metronome might be a metaphor for his days running out or him counting down the days until he dies.

updated: Peaky Blinder homework

In this picture the director of peaky blinders use camera angle and mise en scene to establish exception and character by having the using the puddle to create confusion by having the character up-side down, also to create suspense because the audience can not tell who the characters are. Also the fire connotes power and hellishness of the characters. They are all dressed in the same clothing which shows that they are all part of the same group of people (uniform). The low angle give them power and authority. Also them as a group make them look more threatening.

In this picture the use of camera angle and mise en scene by the puddle creating confusion by being able to see there feet the right way up and the rest of there bodies being up side down. Also them blocking out the light to show there intention and there darkness which can relate to pain. The low angle shot shows power and authority. Them walking through the puddle is a sign of destruction of peace and the fire shows hellishness and power.

In this picture the fire show power and danger by having it behind the men walking. Also it shows that that people have more power then others like the two men in the middle have the same power because they are on the thirds and the other are out side the thirds. the eye level show power in the group in the picture because the people on the edge there eye line is lower then the two men in the middle. The shot hear is a mid shot because you can see from head to mid torso and not any more.
